I have just commenced cycling again. On the first morning, I was very conscious of the threat posed by motor vehicles. I quickly realised however that the threat is not motor vehicles, but other cyclists. Particularly the pack mentality amongst cyclists. What’s more, there is a lot of testosterone flying around as these lycra clad “real men” (irrespective of gender) charge along the cycle path to show how athletic they are, and how much they are the true alpha male (even if they are female). This pack mentality is certainly prevalent in human beings and particularly amongst men. It starts in primary school and develops rapidly over the years. Those that don’t grow up take it into their adult lives. It seems; without simplifying too much, that there are two types of cyclists: 1. those who simply want some exercise, a cheaper way of travel, cleaner way of travel and…
