don’t forget to address the lgbtqi community This is the first of five ‘Thoughts of the Day’ addressing the marketing opportunities in the LGBTQI community. It would, of course, be folly to suggest that this is a homogeneous community. It is anything but. For this reason, among others, the primary focus here is on people identifying as gay or lesbian. So why is this market important to marketers? There are many reasons for this, including the size of the market, and the wealth of its members. Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics suggest that: • 1.23% of Australian adults identify as homosexual • 1.6% of adult men identify as homosexual • 0.08% of adult women identify as homosexual • 1.4% of men identify as bi-sexual • 0.09% of women identify as bi-sexual There are estimated to be: • 17,600 male homosexual couples in Australia • 16,100 female homosexual couples…
