Yes, I know that is a strange headline for an article written by someone who has had a good part of his income from advertising! The facts are however that advertising does not sell product. That does not, however, mean it is not important. A few months ago whilst driving along Railway Parade in Leederville I saw a billboard for a home builder (Perceptions I think). my immediate reaction was that the house was ugly. Following on from this, my conclusion was that Perceptions are building ugly houses these days. I even asked myself why would this firm advertise such an ugly home. Some time later whilst reflecting on this *(which I suggest most people outside of advertising or building would not do), I concluded that my reaction to the house was a matter of taste.
