Breaking from the current theme – now for something completely different. Following the death of a friend’s mother, I found myself in the first pew in a church, listening to a Christian interpretation of what had just occurred (death) and what was about to occur (life after death), and indeed the reasons why. What struck me most was the degree to which those assembled bought onto the lessons offered by the priest – despite the complete lack of evidence or rational thinking. While I am sure I was not alone in my doubt, I was in no doubt that the majority of people in attendance – not only bought into the lessons – but took solace from them. While kneeling, payers were said with reverence. While standing, hymns were sung with gusto. While seated, speeches were listened to with respect.
