How ethical is socialisation hiding behind education? Much of what happens in the education system is more about socialisation than education, especially during the twelve years in the school system, but also in tertiary education. School uniforms are about socialisation, as is the way students are supposed to address teachers, and the way they are supposed to conduct ourselves in class. Even the examination system is about socialisation and conformity. Much worse, however, what we are told is important, what we a expected to learn, and the occupations we are expected to prepare for are part of the socialisation process. Even bullying is part of the socialisation process. Worst of all what we are told to think , believe and take as unquestionable ‘givens in life’ are part of a socialisation process. I would argue strongly that education is MUCH more about socialisation that it is about creating great and flexible…
